A good dog food is one that is well balanced and provides optimum nutrition for your dog's needs. While researching dog foods available commercially I was surprised to find that many of the brands I thought were quality foods did not rate as well as expected. In evaluating these foods I made up a formula based on the ingredients, nutritional information and grade of the ingredients. More ratings, similar to mine, and the basic model for mine. Dog food listings. My formula is as follows:
- Starting with 100 percent as a grade
- I took away 10 each for animal by-products & non-human grade ingredients
- I took away 10 for BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin
- I took away 5 for every ingredient repeated in another form (rice flour, brewer's rice...)
- I took away 3 if their was less than 2 meat sources
- I took away 3 for animal digest
- I took away 3 for corn
- I took away 3 for animal fat within top 10
- I took away 2 for soy
- I took away 2 for wheat
- I took away 1 for salt within top 10 ingredients
- I took away 1 for color
- I took away 1 for sugar or molasses
- I added 5 if had been tested by AAFCO and met criteria
- I added 5 if was endorsed by major breed or club
- I added 3 for pro or prebiotics
- I added 3 each for fruit or vegetables
- I added 2 if hormone & antibiotic free, pesticide free, preservative free
- I added 2 for barley
- I added 2 for flax
